INFLATION TECHNIQUES
Gibberish Pages
There are many pages on the Internet that attempt to fool search engines by writing or auto-generating web page content that contains a large amount of words concatenated together. To humans, these pages are nonsensical. To robots, the pages might appear to contain a large array of applicable content. For example, the content of the URL:

http://www.ethereal.com/bammalammadingdong/hearthrug/superfluous/Amy

is an obvious attempt to artificially increase rank with search spiders. The generation mechanism for such a page employed creating randomly named directories with randomly created files that contain simulated paragraphs, links, bulleted lists and even bogus e-mail addresses. Because pages like this are not designed for the end users of their site, it is in the best interest of the spammer to keep this text Hidden [see below].
Infrequently Used Words
A similar technique and one that is usually used with Gibberish Pages [above] is where web site owners use infrequently used dictionary words throughout their site whether or not they have relevance. To fool robot AI, these words are used in grammatical sentences. Examples:

- The oenogen coming from the wine bottle is intoxicating.
- The sound of the tethrippharmatelasipedioploctypophilous is deafening in this coliseum.

- as the industry grows larger, web authors are unfortunately adhibiting the techniques listed above.
Hidden Text
When inflation techniques are used by web sites, many spend a large effort to hide text like that described above. This is because many technical users know when they arrive at pages with nonsense words, the the site owners have done this to increase traffic sent to them VIA search engines. The sites can maintain their rank longer if they are not reported to the search engines. Historically, the following hidden text methods can be used to 'hide' text from the user while ensuring that robots can still 'see' it:

  • Text in HTML tag is positioned outside of the browser viewable area
  • Text is shown in web page with the same or similar color as background
  • Text resides in page as a comment within script tags
  • Dynamic pages serve up completely different pages to robots as they do to normal browsers using User-Agent filtering
